Best AI Chrome extensions in 2026 — an honest comparison
There are dozens of AI Chrome extensions and half of them do the same thing badly. This guide compares the leading ones on what actually matters day to day: does the AI read your page, does it work on every site, does it cost sensible money, and does it respect your data.
Full disclosure — I built WriterPi, one of the extensions in this list. I have tried to write the comparison fairly. You will decide if I succeeded.
What to look for in an AI browser extension
Before the comparison, here is what actually matters:
- Page-awareness. Does the AI see the tab you are on, or is it just a chatbox that opens on top of it? The whole point of a browser extension is that the AI knows what you are looking at. Extensions that do not read the page are just chatbots with extra steps.
- Site coverage. Does it work in Gmail, on Reddit, on Medium, on random blogs, and on webmail as well as on the main sites? Or does it break on half the internet?
- Real pricing that scales. Free plans that give you six messages a month are useless. Look for either a real free tier or a paid tier that costs less per month than a Netflix subscription.
- Data policy. Some extensions train AI on the text you send them. Some sell your usage patterns to marketers. Read the privacy policy or use one that publishes clear rules.

What it does well: Reads the page before it answers, works on every website, has eight writing tones including a real Gen Z voice, ships with page context, image scanning, translation to 20+ languages, and PDF export. Free tier is real — 10 messages with no signup, 25 per month with signup. Paid plans start at $1 for three days of unlimited use.
Where it falls short: It is a young project. Fewer polish edges than the older tools. No mobile version yet (browser extension only).
Best for
Writers, students, and freelancers who want an all-round AI sidekick that reads the page and does not cost twenty dollars a month.
Sider AI Sidebar
What it does well: Mature product with solid polish. Multiple model choices. Good UI for chat history.
Where it falls short: Free tier is tightly capped. Paid plans push you toward higher tiers than most people need. Some users have flagged its data policy as unclear about how conversations are used.
Monica AI
What it does well: Rich feature set — image generation included, tab-organizing tools, custom bots. Big user base.
Where it falls short: The feature sprawl makes it feel bloated. Onboarding tries to upsell you five times before you can send your first message. Free tier is basically a demo.
Merlin
What it does well: Works across multiple browsers, not just Chrome. Fast responses.
Where it falls short: Message-based pricing gets expensive fast for real usage. The chatbox does not always read the page well.
ChatGPT for Google (and similar)
What it does well: Adds an AI answer next to Google search results. Convenient for quick queries.
Where it falls short: Only works alongside search — does not help you write emails, summarize articles, or fill forms. Very narrow use case for a browser extension.
Grammarly
What it does well: Best-in-class for grammar and spelling correction. Deep integration with docs and email.
Where it falls short: Not really an AI sidebar — it is a correction layer over what you type. If you need a chat interface, article summaries, or translation, it does not do those.
